Hockey tournament takes to streets to PlayOn!

The runners-up of last year’s PlayOn! four-on-four tournament in Langley like their chances as North America’s largest street hockey tournament comes to Downtown Vancouver this weekend.

“I think we’ll do better this year,” said Johnny Demos, a member of Frog Legs, who won last year’s hardest slap shot competition — with a blistering 170 km/h. “We added a couple of players.”

Frog Legs are a reincarnation of The Jam, who finished second in the elite division last year and earned a spot in the national tournament.

“It was wonderful,” said Jerome Drapeau, who trekked to Windsor in February to play in the tournament. “There was a lot of teams, good competition.”

The Vancouver tournament, which runs Saturday and Sunday, will be held on 25 “street rinks” on seven blocks surrounding Andy Livingstone Park near GM Place.

Organizers of the event expect to have 250 to 300 teams and more than 1,500 people taking part.
