How we got fit this year

As a generally overweight population, the American public is never without the need for a new diet or exercise regime that promises to be the solution for dropping a few pounds. Here’s a look at some of the year’s biggest trends.

Boot camps
The intense military-style weight loss programs seen on “The Biggest Loser” and “Celebrity Fit Club” have finally brought the no-holds-barred boot camp workout to the mainstream.

Dance/ performance workouts

The stripper pole, for better or worse, is quickly becoming a favorite exercise tool for women across the U.S., as dozens of gyms have turned the striptease into a workout that highlights balance and muscle tone. Meanwhile, Reebok’s Cirque du Soleil-inspired trapeze workout, Jukari, is becoming popular with celebs for being tons of fun and great on the arms.

The no-diet diet
Championed by “Real Housewives of New York” star Bethenny Frankel, the no-diet concept maintains that we simply stick to the concept of moderation.

Tech-enhanced workouts
The Wii has done wonders for spicing up the at-home workout with Wii Fit.

Slim-down footwear

FitFlops and Skechers’ Shape-Ups hit the market this year with the appealing promise of slimming down the bum and thighs with casual walking.

Eating local
With a boost from films such as this year’s doc “Food, Inc.,” the locavore movement strives to conserve resources while enjoying locally produced foods that are healthier.
