The city’s beloved Hubway is slated to turn one-year-old Saturday, and in advance of the milestone, sponsors and supporters of the green transit option will host a free a bash tonight at 6 p.m.
The birthday party will be held inside the “Let’s Talk About Bikes” exhibit at the Boston Society of Architects space on Congress Street.
The exhibit examines the growth in bike infrastructure and ridership in the urban realm, and is open until August 31.
“The exhibit is focused on the role of the bike in urban environments, specifically, Boston,” said Mark Pasnik, who is one of the exhibit’s curators.
At the Hubway birthday bash, guests will be able to meander through the exhibit, and check out 15 custom made bikes from local manufacturers, as well as photography by local bike focused photographers, and more.
Mary Fichtner, Program Manager at the Boston Society of Architects, said there is no cap on how many guests can attend tonight’s free party.
“We are expecting a great turnout. We had 700 people attend the opening of the (“Let’s Talk About Bikes”) exhibit,” Fitchner said. “The goal is to foster dialogue about why residents in Boston do, or do not, ride bikes. We are not trying to say that the bike is the answer to all of the environment’s ills, but we are trying to get people talking about the benefits.”
The Hubway bicycle sharing service launched in Boston on July 28, 2011 with 60 stations and 600 bicycles. The network serves Allston, Brighton, Downtown Boston, the South End and parts of South Boston and Roxbury.
Mayor Thomas M. Menino is expected to stop by the party tonight to say a few words. There will also be special bicycle-related demonstrations, like Boloco’s bike-powered smoothie maker and Taza Chocolate’s “Choco-Cycle,” as well as free snacks and music.
Organizers said that guests who ride their bikes to the party will get free bike valet parking.
