Want to see Sir Paul or the tall ships, but have the flu — stay home.
That’s the message Nova Scotia’s chief public health officer Dr. Robert Strang had about influenza A (H1N1), also known as swine flu.
There has been an increase in the number of new and severe reported cases of the flu in Nova Scotia. Tests have confirmed 32 new cases in the past week.
There have been 210 cases of swine flu in the province, with six hospitalizations since the first case was confirmed April 26.
“It’s not at a level that we need to be cancelling events,” Strang told reporters Thursday. “What we’re doing is asking people to take some personal responsibility — protect yourself, protect your fellow citizens.”
Strang recommended people bring hand sanitizer to any of the festivals and concerts over the next few weeks, but more importantly, people should stay home for seven days if they feel flu symptoms.
“You may not be that severely ill but the person that you spread it to beside you can get severely ill and perhaps even die,” Strang proclaimed.
