Michael Ignatieff became the second federal leader to campaign in Winnipeg when he spoke at a town hall meeting last night.
A pro-Liberal crowd received the Liberal leader with a warm welcome at the Franco-Manitobain Cultural Centre on Provencher Boulevard. The free public event started at 7 p.m. — shortly after Ignatieff arrived from Vancouver where he made a campaign stop in the morning.
Ignatieff’s visit came one day after Prime Minister Stephen Harper also made a campaign stop in Winnipeg.
When speaking about the challenges of dealing with people suffering from dementia, Ignatieff referenced the case of a Winnipeg nursing home resident who died after being allegedly pushed by a fellow resident with Alzheimer’s.
He also told the crowd that they “mattered.”
He received a standing ovation after the speech.
Ignatieff stayed the night in Winnipeg and has a planned appearance at Lord Roberts Preschool this morning where he’s expected to announce the party’s childcare plan.
The childcare plan is part of the a larger “learning strategy” to be unveiled as the election campaign progresses, including investments in early learning, aboriginal learning, and expanding language training for new Canadians.
