Income gap needs attention: MP

As the gap between the rich and the poor continues to grow in the country, and Halifax MP Alexa McDonough says neither the provincial nor federal governments are doing enough to stop it.

The New Democrat MP was home from Ottawa yesterday, hosting a public discussion at Veith House with a panel of experts on Canada’s growing income gap.

A study recently released by the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives found that incomes for the richest one per cent of the population have been growing steadily while the “new normal” for Canada’s middle 90 per cent is “stagnant or declining real wages, despite unprecedented improvements in education and skills.”

McDonough said the gap is widening “because of the predictable outcome of policies that governments are consciously choosing to implement.”

She applauded Nova Scotia NDP Leader Darrell Dexter for voting against the Conservative budget yesterday, saying the budget was missing pieces that would narrow the gap.
