Infrastructure projects on time

Seven months to go and almost all of Ottawa’s 115 infrastructure stimulus projects are on course to be finished on time and under budget.

In an update delivered to councillors on Thursday, Wayne Newell, the city’s general manager of infrastructure services, reported that only two projects are in danger of not making the March 31 cut-off to be eligible for federal and provincial funding.

Those two projects, the Hazeldean Road widening and the Terry Fox Drive extension are expected to require around $5 million of work after the deadline.

“It was a huge undertaking to overcome the necessary approvals,” said Newell. “The challenge today is really about the magnitude of work … The activity and movement of employees and goods is quite overwhelming.”

The total cost for all projects was projected to hit $401 million. With contracts signed on all but one project, the total cost is now estimated at $370 million, said Newell.
