A wounded animal rarely seen in Nova Scotia has been rescued and nursed to health.
On July 1, a 10-week-old fisher was discovered next to the highway near Weymouth and was brought to the Hope for Wildlife’s rehabilitation centre in Seaforth, said Hope Swinimer, director of the centre.
The fisher, named Henderson, was suffering from trauma shock, she said.
Swinimer said the fisher has fully recovered, but is still too young to be re-released into the wild. She said the critter will remain at an outdoor enclosure at the centre until at least the fall.
There are less than 700 fishers left in the province, she said.
Team effort
Henderson was discovered by local resident Thomas Comeau, retrieved by the Department of Natural Resources and turned over to Nicole Payne of Hope for Wildlife. Payne brought the fisher to the Metro Animal Emergency Clinic in Burnside and it was treated by veterinarian Dr. Cathy Lamey.
