Internship program gives immigrants a head start

Sudanese-born Madut Majok was displaced in his home country’s civil war.

Here in Ottawa, he got an internship through the Federal Internship for Newcomers program, which later became a permanent job.

“This internship will change how your resumes will be assessed by employers,” he told prospective interns Tuesday.

The 2010-2011 Federal Internship for Newcomers program launched Tuesday to help newcomers acquire Canadian work experience in fields relevant to their skills, said Minister of Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism Jason Kenney.

This fall, 60 interns will take part in the program, which has been expanded other agencies, including Health Canada, Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, Natural Resources Canada and the Canada Border Services Agency.
