Jacoby Ellsbury has been named the American League Comeback Player of the Year, MLB announced this morning.
Lance Berkman of the St. Louis Cardinals picked up the NL honors.
The award is officially sanctioned by Major League Baseball, and is presented annually to one player in each league who has re-emerged on the baseball field during the season.
Ellsbury played just 18 games in 2010, due to various injuries. But he posted a phenomenal statistical campaign this season, setting career highs in just about every offensive category.
He hit .321 with 32 home runs, 105 RBIs, 46 doubles, five triples and 119 runs scored, while leading the big leagues with 364 total bases and 83 extra-base hits.
Ellsbury posted an OPS+ score of 146, where 100 is the league average. It was the highest of his career, 116 points higher than the previous season.
