‘Jeggings’ become fashion’s hottest hybrid

Once discounted as fleeting trends, both skinny jeans and leggings are now such wardrobe staples that they have mutated into “jeggings” — fashion-speak for denim leggings.

Imagine the structured look of denim combined with the comfort of leggings and it’s not difficult to understand why this best-of-both-worlds hybrid is one of the most popular trends of the season.

Described as a “comfy, casual version of your favourite skinny jeans” by Karen Richter, showroom manager for the P.R. department at H&M Canada, jeggings are more wearable than you may suspect,

Style experts seem to agree that the key to fashionably sporting jeggings is less about body type and more about the importance of pairing them with pieces that offer balance and proportion.

“I actually think that a jegging is amazing on any body type, 24 to 32, we do the full size range,” says Lauren Applebaum, brand manager for Hudson Jeans Canada.

Applebaum suggests that it’s as easy as 1-2-3. “Pair with a great top, something that’s a perfect length. Nothing too bulky, nothing too tight.”

“Jeggings look best paired with a tunic or three-quarter length blazer to give a bit of coverage,” elaborates Richter.

In the summer, choose a great heel to wear with your jeggings, leaving your ankle exposed, transition into cooler months by tucking them into a boot. Given their versatility, the popularity of jeggings shows no signs of slowing down anytime soon. In fact, expect to see an evolution of the jegging come fall.

The use of super-stretchy denim (as opposed to knit fabrics) offers a legging fit but will see the return of traditional jean details like usable pockets and zippers as with Fidelity Denim’s Super Stretch options. Applebaum confirms, “We feel really strongly about jeggings and we’re running it in colours for fall. The jegging is something that will be around for awhile.”
