Jets keep it close in loss to undefeated Texans

A representative effort won’t get the Jets anywhere in the standings.

The Jets were big underdogs against a 4-0 Texans team and earned the team’s respect, but not the win, in a 23-17 loss last night.

Houston opened the game with a quick drive and 34-yard touchdown pass to Owen Daniels, but Mark Sanchez answered with a drive and touchdown of his own to Jeff Cumberland.

After 10 unanswered points by Houston, the Jets were driving for what would’ve been a momentum changing score at the end of the half when Sanchez was picked off by Brice McCain inside the 5-yard line. McCain returned the ball all the way to the Jets’ 9-yard line with 14 seconds left and the Texans would settle for a field goal to make it 17-7 at the half.

After a Shayne Graham field goal made it 20-7, Joe McKnight kept the Jets in the game with a 100-yard kickoff return for touchdown.

Houston moved the ball at will much of the game, but bogged down in the red zone repeatedly.

The Jets got the ball back with 3:28 left in the game and a chance to score the go-ahead touchdown. Sanchez rushed to get a play off before the two-minute warning and threw an interception to Kareem Jackson on a tipped pass by Cumberland to effectively end the game.

Sanchez finished the night 14-of-31 for 231 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions.
