Jo Dee Messina keeps it simple on stage

When you see Jo Dee Messina in concert, don’t expect wardrobe changes or a glam overload, warned the country music star.

Instead, arrive ready to have a good time.

“We have fun,” said the Massachusetts-born, Grammy award-nominated singer, who is known for songs Heads Carolina, Tails California, Lesson in Leavin’ and Because You Love Me.

“We’re about connecting with the audience and visiting with them.”

Ottawa residents will get that visit when Messina takes the Capital Hoedown stage to perform hits from her latest album, Unmistakable: Love and more on Friday night.

The Nashville resident gets her musical inspiration from life, “whether it’s mine or someone else’s.”

“I have to see it and feel it and be passionate about it, or else it doesn’t work,” she said. “Every song I do well is a song that I love. And I think fans sense that. I’m all about keeping it real.”

Although she writes some of her own material, she’s objective when it comes to choosing pieces to perform.

“There are so many great songwriters out there,” she said. “And if they come out with something better, I’m not too proud to use it.”
