Metro Halifax reporter Rachel Mendleson has been awarded the Edward Goff Penny Memorial Prize for her series on HRM by Design and urban development issues in Halifax, published in September in The Daily News.
The prize will be presented at the Canadian Newspaper Association’s annual luncheon in Toronto in early May. The winner in the over-25,000 circulation category was Omar El Akkad of the Globe and Mail.
Mendleson’s series on urban development in the city and the battle between heritage conservationists and growth-and-renewal supporters was deemed “an important catalyst in engaging local residents in the debate,” the CNA said.
Mendleson’s submission also included a medical story on one man’s experience with thyroid cancer.
