Road closures at this weekend’s Juno Awards will give Vancouverites a taste — albeit on a smaller scale — of what the downtown will be like during the 2010 Olympics.
From Saturday morning to Monday at 3 a.m., roads between Pacific Boulevard and Expo Boulevard are being shut down to vehicles.
Muriel Honey, manager of special events in Vancouver, said the closures are worth it.
“There’s a cost to it, but there’s a huge benefit,” Honey said. “We’re always happy to welcome the world to Vancouver.”
Closures will also take place around GM Place and on Granville Street for JunoFest and the awards show.
Brian Fernie, part-time special event co-ordinator for Vancouver, said the closures are the best choice.
“It’s probably one of the better spots to have it in the downtown area without disrupting too much traffic,” Fernie said, adding there’s going to be a lot of entertainment set up throughout the area until the Junos.
The City of Vancouver website is also warning of traffic delays before and after the award show.
The Junos run this Sunday, with the JunoFest starting Friday.
