Who said you can’t sell water to a whale? Apparently, Kanye West has found a way. Recently, he announcedthe launch of a clothing line with French brand A.P.C that features men’s jeans, T-shirts and hoodies. One of the most talked-about items from the line is the Hip Hop T-Shirt, which is essentially your basic Hanes undershirt. The difference? A $120 price tag.
Though it seems like a hefty cost for the Egyptian cotton tee, Kanye fans can’t seem to get enough. After launching on July 14, the T-shirts (along with the entire collection) sold out in just a few hours.
The irony of it all is the backlash he’s received as a result of the collection’s exorbitant prices. On his recent album, “Yeezus,”Kanye tackles many social issues, including excessive spending to keep up with celebrity culture.
In the track “Blood on the Leaves,” he proclaims: “Two thousand dollar bag with no cash in your purse.” The lyric is one of the many addressing mass consumerism and its effects on those who can’t necessarily afford their expensive purchases.
Fans took to Twitter almost immediately, calling Kanye out on his hypocrisy.
The twitter page for urban clothing line, Guns & Crayons posted, “Gotta love Kanye West he will make a song like new slaves then turn around and sell you a $120 white tee made of Egyptian cotton smh.”
A basic white T-shirt, $120. Having “A.P.C. Kanye” silkscreened on your inner neckline? Priceless.
