Keep the kids active at these camps during March Break

March Break can be a great time for kids to shake off the winter slumber with an active week. HRM has a wide selection of camps to challenge and entertain youngsters during the break.

HRM Recreation offers a Hip Hop Workshop for children aged 8 to 12 at the LeBrun Centre on March 18, rock-climbing classes for kids aged 5 to 12 throughout the day on March 16, and a full week of activities mixing sports, crafts, science and drama from March 15 to 19 at the Lakeside Community Centre.

For a straight-up fitness focus, the March Break Sport and Fitness Camp targets kids between the ages of 9 and 12 for a week of basketball, soccer, volleyball, badminton and lots of other activities at the Chocolate Lake Recreation Centre.

To learn more about all HRM Rec programs, go to halifax.ca/rec or call 490-6666. If funding is an issue, HRM Kids helps youth who might not be able to afford to go. They can be reached at 479-4760 or halifax.ca/rec/HRMKids.html.

Dalhousie University turns Dalplex over to the kids for March Break. Active Kids March Break Day Camp, for children aged five to 10, offers an action-packed week of sports, games and crafts as well as outings and a daily swim. There are also specialized camps for basketball, climbing and an Outdoor Rangers camp for youth who want to explore the natural world. Learn more at athletics.dal.ca or by calling 494-3372.

Saint Mary’s University is also offering a basketball camp for boys and girls. Call 420-5429 for details.

Soccer Nova Scotia is holding a Future Stars camp for boys (afternoon) and girls (morning) under 12 in March Break and over the summer. Register at soccerns.ns.ca or call 445-0265.
For something completely different, kids can run away to join the circus — or at least, the cirque. Atlantic Cirque is holding a full week, full day camp for ages 7 to 13. Budding circus stars will learn trampoline, juggling, stilts, human pyramids, aerial apparatus (trapeze, cerceau, rope) and more. The week concludes with a cirque show put on by the kids. Register at atlanticcirque.com.

Most of the above camps also run over the summer, so if you miss them in the spring, book ahead.
