A 23-year-old Brooklyn man beat his mother and 9-year-old brother with a hammer, Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said today.
The man, who police believe might be mentally ill, seriously injured both people, and the brother is not expected to survive, Kelly said.
The incident happened at 6 a.m. this morning, when the mother reportedly called 911 in the morning from their Bedford-Stuyvesant apartment.
Both were taken to the hospital with injuries from the hammer. The mother was in satisfactory condition, Kelly said.
The New York Post reports that officers arrive to find the suspect being held down in the basement by another brother, 24, and that he is now at Woodhull Hospital for an psychiatric evolution.
