Khalid Sheikh Mohammed will not be tried in New York

The alleged Sept. 11 mastermind will not be tried in New York City.

The United States military announced today that Khalid Sheikh Mohammed will be tried by a military tribunal at Guantanamo Bay.

Officials had considered trying him in a New York court after Attorney General Eric Holder suggesting a civilian court in 2009.

Some New Yorkers supported trying Mohammed in the city, where the 9/11 terror attacks occurred.

But others, including Governor Andrew Cuomo, expressed concern, some saying that trials would make New York more of a terrorist target and bring logistical problems like traffic congestion.

Mohammed, accused of helping to train the hijackers, will be tried with four other accused terrorism plotters who all face the death penalty. The defendants are scheduled to be arraigned in May, according to the Associated Press.

The American Civil Liberties Union condemned the decision.

“The Obama Administration is making a terrible mistake by prosecuting the most important terrorism trials of our time in a second-tier system of justice,” executive director Anthony Romero said.
