Kids rule St. Albert as the community northwest of Edmonton gets set to hold their annual international festival.
For the 29th year, the International Children’s Festival kicks off today and ends June 5 and festival director Nancy Abrahamson said she’s expecting about 55,000 people to take in the five days of magic, dancing, acrobatics, arts and culture for all ages.
“I’ve been a part of this festival for the past 16 years and it never ceases to amaze me,” Abrahamson said at the kickoff party yesterday.
“This year is no different.”
The festival features performers from Belgium, Taiwan, Scotland, Vietnam and Canada, and it’s all for the kids.
“For many little ones, this festival is their first taste of the arts,” Abrahamson said.
“We’re focusing more on what kids want to see but obviously we all enjoy what our kids enjoy.
The festival is for everyone. It’s for the young and for the young at heart.”
In order to be successful, the children’s festival relies on donations like the one received yesterday — $50,000 from the Alberta Lottery Fund.
“The memories and experiences created here will last a lifetime,” Abrahamson said.
“That’s why it’s so important for us to make sure this year’s festival is accessible to every family.”
Thanks to support from the Alberta government, Abrahamson said the festival is able to keep ticket prices low and offer free activities open to everyone.
The festival director said she couldn’t wait to let the fun begin.
“There’s lots happening and there’s lots for everyone,” she said.
