Last chance to skate

If you haven’t gotten out on the Rideau Canal Skateway yet, Thursday is your last chance.

Due to expected mild temperatures, the Skateway closes at 11 p.m. Thursday, but it’s going out in style — Wednesday night, the Rideau Canal Skateway Operations team will flood the Skateway one last time to ensure that residents and visitors will enjoy the best possible skating conditions.

The Rideau Canal Skateway has enjoyed about one million visits since this season began on Jan. 1.

The 39th season of skating lasted for 64 days and offered residents and visitors in Canada’s capital region 58 days of skating, which is longer than the average over the last five years.

The mild weather forecast for the end of the week will weaken the ice to the point that the Skateway will become unsafe and unpredictable. Skaters and pedestrians are also asked to respect barricades and signs installed at access points.
