Legislature returns to grapple with red ink

The B.C. Legislature reconvened Monday to amend provincial legislation allowing the Liberal government to present a deficit budget next week.

“British Columbia is feeling the impact of global economic forces beyond our control,” Finance Minister Colin Hansen said.

“We have seen an unprecedented drop in provincial revenues. The proposed changes will allow us to make responsible choices today to build for a stronger future.”

The proposed changes to the Balanced Budget and Ministerial Accountability Act will allow for deficit budgets for two years and require a balanced budget in 2011-12.

The provincial budget will be tabled on Feb. 17 and is expected to include significant government spending in an effort to boost the economy.
