Though Jordin Sparks is calling her current group of concert dates “The Battlefield Tour,” the singer says the shows have been more like a field day.
She says the only challenge for her has been adjusting to the longer sets that a headlining slot requires. After winning “Idol” in 2007, she has been on a whirlwind of package tours and opening slots for the likes of the Jonas Brothers, Alicia Keys and Britney Spears, where she would usually only do five or six songs. But this is definitely a battle she can win.
“I’m doing the songs from my first record — you know, the songs everyone knows, the big songs — but at the same time I get to sing more of the songs from the records that I wrote and that I actually love and maybe people haven’t heard as much,” she says, sounding like an excited teenager, because, well, up until a few months ago, that’s exactly what she was. Now she’s an excited 20-year-old.
Another event that she’s excited about is playing the lead role in the Broadway production of “In the Heights,” which begins in August.
“It is going to be another whirlwind,” she says, “but I’m used to whirlwinds.”
