The Lincoln Memorial was closed to visitors Friday after vandals splashed green paint on the statue of President Abraham Lincoln and the floor.

U.S. Park Police told several Washington, D.C., news outlets, including the Washington Post, that the vandalism happened around 1:30 a.m. Friday.

Investigators plan to review surveillance video in hopes of finding whoever was responsible.

There’s no word on how long the memorial will be shut down. It is usually open to the public 24 hours a day, seven days a week. [embedgallery id=192321]

The memorial sits at the west end of the National Mall. It has been the location of many historic gatherings, including Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King’s “I Have A Dream” speech, which took place 50 years ago next month.
