Literacy council translates Munsch book

IQALUIT, Nunavut – The Nunavut Literacy Council has published the book “Just One Goal,” by acclaimed Canadian children’s author Robert Munsch, in the Inuit language.

The council said in a news release the project was accomplished with sponsorship from Nunasi Corp.

“Just One Goal” tells the story of a girl who struggles to get a hockey rink built closer to home in her Northwest Territories community.

The council says Munsch stayed with its executive director, Kim Crockatt, and her family when he was in Cambridge Bay a few years ago.

While there, he encouraged her to publish his books in Inuktitut, a language of eastern Nunavut, and Inuinnaqtun, a dialect of the western region.

Crockatt says three of Munsch’s books have been translated over the last three years.

“It is great for kids to be able to read Robert Munsch’s fun stories in their own language,” she says.
