Local makes Miss World Canada cut

Crystal Grierson is one of those girls you’d love to hate.

After qualifying last month, the 22-year-old Ottawa resident is headed to the Miss World Canada competition in Vancouver on May 7. She’s ambitious, to boot — a recent graduate from Carleton University, she hopes to pursue a master’s degree and a PhD.

But when you hear about Grierson’s real passion, you can’t help but root for her.

She started volunteering in her early teens and now volunteers with the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Ottawa. “Any chance I get to volunteer, I’ll pounce on,” she said.

Volunteering, in fact, was what got her interested in entering the Miss World Canada competition. “I was researching this pageant on the Internet and noticed that they focused on children’s charities,” she said. “That sparked an interest.”

Grierson will be one of 30 women from across Canada vying for the crown.
