The Spring show cycle continues across the pond. We’ll have updates on all the best shows from the Brits.
1. Topshop Unique:
Chic, sheer and monochrome with a dash of sparkle was the mainstay of the Topshop Unique collection. The Unique label seems to be growing up with sophisticated looks like the fluid, windowpane check shifts worn with buttercup-yellow boyfriend jackets, while pajama-esque pieces looked relaxed and airy. A few sheer numbers with cut-out-style blocks of white or black fabric and asymmetrical-zipped dresses added some edge. But a Topshop girl’s got to have fun, and that’s where the sequin pieces came into play.
2. Vivienne Westwood:
Vivienne Westwood stands up for what she believes in like some kind of 21st-century Boudica. Fittingly, the designer, a champion of environmental causes, stepped out at the end of her Spring show wearing a T-shirt stating “Climate Revolution,” ghastly underwear, a painted-on handlebar ‘stache, a black ring scrawled around her left eye, and a Stephen Jones hat — quite a sight. The show itself consisted of ’50s-inspired, ladylike pieces: cocktail dresses, Jacquard skirt suits, head scarves and twinsets. Model’s faces were accented with yellow, green, pink and blue makeup. It was all pretty pared down for Westwood, but then there was a live performance by Rooster with the designer’s muse, Sara Stockbridge, to ramp up the anti-establishment punk vibe.
