Loyal opposition will fight ‘hateful attitudes’: Cuomo

While pledging to help President-elect Donald Trump govern on behalf of forgotten Americans, Gov. Andrew Cuomo shared his take on the outcome of the election: “We are soul sick.”

In an open letter published Sunday night in the New York Daily News, Cuomo warned that Democrats will honor the election results, but “reject the hateful attitudes” that punctuated the campaign.

“We cannot unhear what we have heard,” the governor wrote. “The voices of the Ku Klux Klan, white nationalism, authoritarianism, misogyny and xenophobia. A generally disdainful view of American ideals.”

To underscore the influence of the ugliness of the campaign, Cuomo pointed to a softball dugout in Wellsville, New York, where a swastika and the words “make America white again” was spray-painted a day after Election Day.

Swastika graffiti has appeared in other locations as well, including the windows of a vacant storefront in South Philadelphia and the dormitory doors at The New School in Lower Manhattan.

The governor welcomed Trump’s interest in rebuilding the nation’s infrastructure. He said the state is eager to work with the federal government on such projects as the Tappan Zee Bridge, a new La Guardia Airport, a new cross-Hudson tunnel and a revitalized Penn Station.

However, the bulk of Cuomo’s letter was a rallying cry for the loyal opposition.

“Already it seems almost every far-right Republican under the sun is seeing Trump’s electoral college victory a mandate to enact sweeping ideas and radical proposals, regardless of the pain that is inflicted and the turmoil that is caused,” he wrote.

Cuomo noted that his father, former governor Mario Cuomo, fought his entire life to do what is right and that he would do no less.

“I will fight against the targeting on Muslims, immigrants, the LGBTQ community, and for the rights of all Americans every day I hold office and every day after that.”
