Lugers touch down

Luge athletes are among the fastest taking part in the Winter Olympics and they were first among Canadian athletes to land in the host city.

Sam Edney, Alex Gough and the rest of the luge team were the first full Canadian contingent to arrive when they touched down at YVR on Thursday.

“I’m just excited to go out there and race,” said Gough, arguably Canada’s best luge medal threat. “Whistler’s a great track, so it’s just going to be so much fun.”

Edney said the hard work is already starting to pay off.

“It’s a huge relief to get here and to finally have that feeling that it is here, and it’s time to enjoy it,” he said. “We’ve done everything in the past four years to prepare for this moment.”

The under-the-radar team is hoping to use the home ice to its advantage, Edney added.

“I know the track really well, we’ve had some really great training on it,” he said. “We have a comfort level on the track and we want to take advantage of it. I think the Canadians have a really great shot at this one.”
