MacKay Bridge to be shut down over weekend

Another scheduled bridge closure is sure to cause headaches for many motorists this weekend.

The MacKay Bridge will be closed to all traffic from Friday at 8 p.m. until Monday at 5:30 a.m. for a continued summertime maintenance project.

This summer’s weekend closures have spawned many aggravated drivers and even caused several accidents on the Macdonald Bridge during the beginning of July, according to police.

Allison MacDonald, communications manager for Halifax Harbour Bridges, advises motorists to “give yourself some extra time” because of the closure.

“It is the weekend and there’s a lot going on,” she said. “We’ve planned these bridge closures on the weekend … because traffic is less during the weekends. We do our best to stay out of the way of the travelling public.”

An additional closure is scheduled for the following weekend. MacDonald said if the weather co-operates, next weekend should be the final full closure of the summer.

The maintenance project costs $7.4 million. Half is provided by the bridge commission, with the rest coming from federal infrastructure dollars.
