Man dead after fall into sewage

A Long Island man was killed after he fell into a vat of untreated sewage Tuesday night, police announced yesterday.

Suffolk County police said they received a 911 call at around 6:45 p.m. Tuesday, reporting that a worker with United Cesspool Service had fallen into a vat of untreated sewage.

Emergency workers pulled an unconscious Richard Dennison out, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

United Cesspool workers were working at an apartment complex, Avalon Commons in Smithtown, Suffolk County, when his fall happened, said police.

Dennison was 43 and lived in Central Islip.

Police said they would notify the federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration.

Suffolk County detectives do not suspect criminality in the incident, which they are calling an accident.
