A man was dragged by his own vehicle when a carjacker broke into it and drove off in downtown Boston last weekend.

Officers were called to the area of Shawmut Avenue and Marginal Road about 11:45 p.m. Saturday for a report of a carjacking, Boston police said.

The victims told police they were walking to their car, which was parked on Shawmut Avenue, when they noticed a man wearing a white motorcycle helmet sitting in the driver’s seat. The car owner said he tried to open the door when the man in the helmet drove off, dragging him on the ground for a short distance, police said.

The victim suffered minor injuries.

The victims also told officers that just before police arrived, the man in the helmet circled back to the scene to retrieve a scooter he left on the sidewalk. The man in the helmet kept yelling “stay away,” the victims told police.

Detectives are investigating.
