A car thief may have thought he took a senior citizen for a ride Sunday morning, but it didn’t take long for police to catch their man behind the wheel of a stolen Toyota.
According to a Halifax RCMP report, the 71-year-old car owner agreed to let the young man take his Avalon for a test drive at about 10:30 a.m., as long as he could accompany him.
“They were travelling north on Highway 102 and had just crossed over the Sackville River when (the suspect) pulled over and told the owner to get out,” the report says.
“He made gestures like he had a weapon in his pocket,” police spokesman Cpl. Joe Taplin added yesterday. The owner left the vehicle, “because he was fearful for his own personal safety,” and then called both his wife and the police, he said.
Police found the vehicle on Beaver Bank Road about 45 minutes later.
Daniel Redmond Marsman was set to face charges of robbery, assault with a weapon, possession of a concealed weapon and possession of a weapon dangerous to the public in Dartmouth provincial court yesterday.
