Man in hospital after apparent shooting

A man is in hospital in critical condition after the vehicle he was driving was apparently shot at during an altercation at a southeast Calgary intersection Thursday night, police say.

Police responded to reports of shots fired around 7:52 p.m. Thursday and two vehicles leaving the area of Dovertree Place and 44 St SE.

A police unit responding to the call was then flagged down by the passenger of a gray Pontiac Cobalt at the intersection of 44 St and 23 Ave SE, who indicated the male driver, a male in his late 30s, had been shot.

After an initial investigation, police say they believe that the Pontiac and another black vehicle were at the intersection of Dovertree Place and 44 St SE and an altercation between the occupants of both cars led to a shot being fired, injuring the driver of the Cobalt.

The cars were then seen leaving the scene northbound on 44 St SE.

Police have not yet located the black car.

Initial finding from the police indicate that this incident is not related to any recent gang shootings.

Calgary Police District 4 GIU is conducting the investigation.
