A person was shot dead by Boston police during a daytime shootout that also left a police officer with a gunshot wound.
Boston police are investigating the officer-involved shooting that took place on Westville Street in Dorchester Saturday afternoon.
The shooting took place just after 1 p.m.
A Boston police officer assigned to the gang unit became involved in an exchange of gunfire with a suspect, police said. During the shootout the officer was hit. He suffered injuries that were not life-threatening. The suspect was shot dead.
A gun was recovered at the scene.
Police did not identify the suspect.
Interim police Commissioner William Evans said at the scene that the suspect, a man, was “known to police.”
“Nobody likes to discharge their firearm, but when we have a situation with deadly force, and they’re trying to kill us, we have no other choice, unfortunately,” Evans said at a press conference near the scene, according to the Globe. “That’s what we’re trained for.”
