Marriage made in Metro

For every jaded New Yorker who doesn’t believe in true love, here’s the story of Marco Fernandez and Silvia Cortegana.

Fernandez, 36, proposed to Cortegana on Wednesday night with an advertisement in Metro.

“I wanted to do something different,” said Fernandez, who reads Metro every day on his way to work in SoHo. “I knew I wanted to marry her the first day I met her.”

He took her to Alto in Midtown for dinner and told her to flip to page 18, ostensibly to find an advertisement for salsa classes. Instead, she saw her name, and the words written in Spanish: “I love you more than anything in the world, and I want to dedicate the rest of my life to being a good husband and creating a family full of love and tenderness with you.”

“I saw my name and the words, ‘Marry me.’ I was in shock!” said Cortegana, 28. She said yes.

The couple — she’s Peruvian and he’s Spanish and British — live together in Long Island City. An October wedding is being planned in Peru.
