Casting Mary Callanan as “Sophie Tucker: The Last of the Red Hot Mamas” was a no-brainer for the New Repertory Theatre. Nobody else has the pipes or the demeanor to fill Tucker’s big, buxom shoes — or the talent, for that matter. Callanan is such dream casting that she’s actually better than the show itself. Any depth, warmth or sense of having actually spent time with Tucker is the direct result of Callanan’s own brassy, bawdy performance style.
