MBTA Roadeo: T drivers, start your engines

MBTA bus driver Robbie Wilson is pretty confident he has what it takes to steer his way toward victory in the 36th Annual MBTA Bus Roadeo.

“I don’t think anybody over there could beat me,” Wilson said of 11 colleagues, which on Friday, are his competitors.

The “roadeo” obstacle course helps the T identifiy the “best of the best” drivers to the test by judging them on their driving skills and techniques as they maneuver buses through a course of barrels and cones, at varying speeds.

“It is very exciting, because this is the time for the elite to shine,” Wilson said.

He has driven a bus around the streets of greater Boston for 20 years – more than 50,000 bus trips – without a preventable accident, according to MBTA Spokesman Joe Pesaturo.

He currently drives a 60-foot articulated bus – which bends in the middle – on the Route 39, Back Bay to Forest Hills.

The roadeo takes place Friday morning at 10 a.m. at the MBTA’s Charlestown bus facility.
