MBTA Transit Police offer tips to pot smokers on how to avoid tickets, arrests

Last week two men were in hot water after Transit Police caught them smoking some pot at the JFK/UMass MBTA station. It turns out, T riders who get are caught smoking or carrying marijuana have a lot of questions for Transit Police, mainly, ‘I thought it was legal, why am I getting a ticket?’

So Transit Police took to their blog to dish out some information on having marijuana in the MBTA.

Here’s a breakdown:

  • It’s not okay to smoke a joint on the platform, or on the bus.
  • Possession of a small quantity of pot still carries a fine of $100, even though voters in 2008 decriminalized having less than an ounce.
  • Riders who have a warrant out for their arrest should not draw attention to themselves on the T, i.e., don’t smoke pot on the T.
  • If you sell a bag of weed in the MBTA, you will get arrested – even if it is less than an ounce. The state decriminalized the possession of marijuana – not the sale.
