McDermott hired as Bills head coach, reports

(Reuters) – The Buffalo Bills have hired Carolina Panthers no-nonsense defensive coordinator Sean McDermott as their new head coach, NFL.com reported on Wednesday.

McDermott, who turned the Panthers into one of the NFL’s top ranked defenses, takes over from Rex Ryan who was fired with one game remaining in the regular season.

Buffalo finished the season with a 7-9 record, missing the playoffs for the 17th consecutive year.

McDermott, who has no previous head coaching experience, spent six seasons as Carolina’s defensive coordinator and before that filled various positions with the Philadelphia Eagles for 12 years.

The Panthers’ defense ranked 21st in yards allowed this season and 26th in points surrendered but finished in the top 10 in yards allowed in each season from 2012 to 2015.

After reports of a lack of discipline in the Buffalo dressing room under Ryan, the Bills turned to the 42-year-old McDermott who arrives with the reputation as a tough disciplinarian.
