Meet Metro’s Earth Day editor

Actor and avid cyclist Mathew Modine has been an environmental ambassador for New York City for some time, so to celebrate Earth Day’s 40th anniversary today, he served as guest editor of this special eco-minded edition.

Modine founded Bicycle for a Day in 2008 to increase the use of the non-polluting transportation, and his green advocacy helped shape the pages of our Earth Day edition.

“I think if you enjoy breathing clean air and drinking fresh water and all of the species in nature, then you’re an environmentalist,” Modine said.

Today’s stories touch on a host of issues related to climate change from recycling and sustainable fish to topics near and dear to Modine’s heart: Van Cortlandt Park (a Bronx jewel whose newly-formed conservancy board he sits on) and bicycling (he also sits on the board of bike advocacy group Transportation Alternatives and is working with them to connect Van Cortlandt’s bike paths to Battery Park’s). There’s also a guide to Earth Day New York events. (Modine will be speaking at the organization’s Times Square event today.)

“He brings a green perspective to city life and is a role model and inspiration for sustainable living,” Metro US Editor-in-Chief Tony Metcalf said.
