Memorial details released for Califano

Funeral arrangements have been announced for Michael Califano, the Nassau County police officer who was killed Saturday in an accident during a routine traffic stop on the Long
Island Expressway.

Califano, 44, of Wantaugh, was sitting in his patrol car behind a truck he had stopped for a traffic violation at 10:55 p.m. at Exit 39 of the Long Island Expressway in Old Westbury, when his car was hit from behind by a flatbed truck whose driver, John Kaley, 25, of New Britain, Conn., had fallen asleep at the wheel.

The wake for Califano will take place at the Massapequa Funeral Home’s South Chapel on Tuesday and Wednesday from 2 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. The funeral will be held Thursday at Maria Regina Roman Catholic Church in Seaford, with burial to follow at the Cemetery of the Holy Rood in Westbury.

“We worked together once on the mounted unit,” Nassau County Officer James Imperiale told Metro. “He was a sharp guy with a really good sense of humor.”

On Saturday, County Executive Edward Mangano ordered all county buildings to fly at half-staff in Califano’s memory.
