Metro awarded for vitality

After just over one year in operation, Metro Calgary has an award to put on its shelf.
The Calgary Downtown Association (CDA) recognized Metro with a 2007 Vitality Award yesterday at the organization’s AGM.

“Metro’s really been a leader in the newspaper business,” said Maggie Schofield, executive director of the CDA.

Schofield noted Metro’s commitment to environmental sensitivity, pointing out the enviro-teams, which clean disposed papers from city transit in the downtown, and the paper’s leadership in helping curb the number of newspaper boxes in the city.

“It’s really great to see that in the downtown,” said Schofield.

The CDA executive said a further example of Metro’s contribution to the vitality of the downtown was the exuberance of the promoters, who provide a positive face first thing in the morning in a core that can “often be too busy and too serious.”

Metro Alberta Publisher Steve Shrout said the award is a milestone for the paper.

“It’s amazing that in only our first year to make enough of an impact in the downtown to be recognized this way,” said Shrout, proud of the partnership built with the CDA.
