Midway crash probe could take months

The cause of Friday evening’s Stampede ride wreck may remain a mystery until fall, says the organization responsible for the investigation.

An investigation into why the Scorpion ride literally fell apart and sent 10 fairgoers to the hospital will take several months, predicts Jessica Spratt of Municipal Affairs.

“The investigation began right after the incident, but it will probably be a while due to the complexity (of the crash),” she said. “The whole ride will be taken apart piece by piece.”

Careful inspections will be made by the Alberta Elevating Devices and Amusement Ride Safety Association and North American Midway Entertainment, the ride’s owner, Spratt said.

Spratt explained that the physical inspection of the ride will take at least one month, and that official reports will not be released until a minimum of one month after the completed inspection.

Both Spratt and Doug Fraser of the Calgary Stampede expressed condolences to those involved in the accident.

“We continue to extend our thoughts and prayers to those who were injured and their families,” said Fraser.
