The Massachusetts Institute of Technology announced on Monday that it has created the Collier Medal to honor the officer who was allegedly killed by the Boston Marathon bombing suspects.

MIT Officer Sean Collier was fatally shot while on campus April 18, just before police became engaged in a gun battle with bombing suspects Tamerlan and Dzhokhar Tsarnaev.

The Collier Medal will be given each year to a person or group who embodies his qualities and character.

“Future recipients of the award will include those whose contributions exceed the boundaries of their profession, those who have contributed to building bridges across the community and those who consistently and selflessly perform acts of kindness,” MIT Vice President and Treasurer Israel Ruiz said in a letter to the school community.

The first Collier Medal will be awarded in February at theMIT Excellence Awards ceremony. Nominations can be submitted online.
