A Sunset Park mother was sentenced to 20 years in prison Tuesday for the 2014 attack that left her 2-year-old son paralyzed with permanent brain damage, acting Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez announced. After a non-jury trial, Yayun Weng, 30, was convicted on Oct. 11 of first-degree assault, second-degree assault and related counts stemming from the incident.
Weng shook the child, hit his feet with a bamboo rod, bit his calf and pinched him, according to court testimony. She took him to Maimonides Medical Center, where he was treated for internal head injuries, bruises and bite marks. The child is paralyzed from the neck down and has permanent brain damage, authorities said. “This horrific violence against a helpless baby at the hands of his mother is disturbing and completely unacceptable,” Gonzalez said. “Instead of protecting her child, this defendant nearly killed him and left him paralyzed. She deserves to be in prison for what she did.” In addition to her 20-year sentence, Weng will also receive five years of post-release supervision.
