Dartmouth Moosehead Dry is hoping to take advantage of a second chance it never expected to get.
The long-time Nova Scotia Senior Baseball League powerhouse is out for redemption as the Canadian senior baseball championships get underway today at Beazley Field and Mainland Common for the second straight year.
Dartmouth, which didn’t make the playoffs at last year’s tournament, unexpectedly got the tournament back after Windsor, Ont., pulled out as host at the last minute.
“This is a great opportunity, especially since we weren’t expecting it,” said Dry outfielder Chris Head.
“When we realized we were getting our second chance, we wanted to jump on it.”
Dartmouth’s dream of winning its first national title on home soil was dashed last year after it lost its first two games.
“We were all really disappointed,” Head said.
“Once we lost those first two, it was a momentum-killer.”
Head said the Dry’s bats “dried up at the wrong time.”
But this year, led by Joel Irvine’s sterling, provincial-best .393 average, Dartmouth is more confident in that department after posting a 19-8 mark this summer, the tops in the province.
“I’m hoping we can put on a better show than last year,” Head said.
“We’re all really hitting the ball well and we’re looking good heading into the tournament.”
