The Halifax Mooseheads have reached a new five-year agreement plus an additional one-year option to stay at the Metro Centre through at least the 2014-15 season.
The Mooseheads, who finished last in the QMJHL the past two seasons, announced the agreement with Trade Centre Ltd. on Tuesday at a press conference in Halifax.
“This is a very big day for the Halifax Mooseheads to cement our relationship with Trade Centre Ltd.,” said Mooseheads majority owner Bobby Smith. “We feel our franchise is at an important juncture as we look to get back on top of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League, where we feel we belong year after year. It’s important for us to have a relationship with one of the finest facilities in the league.”
The Mooseheads have spent all of their 16 seasons at the Metro Centre but nearly left in 2004 when majority owner Bobby Smith — displeased with negotiations with Trade Centre Ltd. — stunned the city by signing a five-year agreement to move to the north-end Forum.
Concerned with losing a major downtown draw, TCL almost immediately tabled an offer more favourable to the Mooseheads. A day later, Smith signed off on the five-year pact with an additional one-year option.
