Mooseheads rookies on the mend; could play Wednesday

Right-winger Alex Lemieux and defenceman Steve Gillard are both ready to go for the Halifax Mooseheads.

Both rookies have recovered from injuries this week and could return to the lineup tomorrow at 7 p.m. at the Metro Centre against the Prince Edward Island Rocket.

Lemieux, who has six goals and seven assists in 37 games, has been out since Dec. 27 with mononucleosis.

Gillard, a 17-year-old with a goal and five assists in 45 games, missed the past two games with a shoulder injury.

The return of Gillard leaves in question the status of fellow defenceman Garrett Clarke.

Clarke was benched for the second half of Saturday’s win over Cape Breton for his lack of discipline and head coach Cam Russell said his return to the lineup against the Rocket will be a game-day decision.

The last-place Mooseheads, 12-37-5, are 10 points behind the Lewiston Maineiacs for the final QMJHL playoff spot. They’re seven behind the Baie-Comeau Drakkar.
