Motion to donate to quake victims withdrawn

A city councillor has pulled back a plan that could have seen the city paying $80,000 towards new schools in China for students displaced by an earthquake last May.

Coun. Don Iveson said in an executive committee meeting yesterday circumstances had changed since the motion to donate cash to the Edmonton Chinese Quake Relief Committee was put forth.

“I’ve had an opportunity to ponder this further and entertain input from the public,” said Iveson. “At this point I am prepared, oddly enough … to have the recommendation withdrawn.”

The city has in the past given $100,000 in relief money to help victims who were displaced after the South Asian tsunami.

The Edmonton Humane Society was also given city dollars in a trip to rescue pets that were displaced and neglected in Louisiana after Hurricane Katrina.
